Wrapping up NaBloPoMo

Today marks the end of NaBloPoMo…thank GOD.

It’s not that I don’t enjoy blogging…I do, and I have for a very long time.  But I’ve discovered that blogging every single day can become a mundane chore very quickly if you let it.  It’s very easily done.

Nevertheless, I have SUCCEEDED! I successfully blogged every day for the past month and that makes me feel all special and stuff. I started this blog specifically for this project and I didn’t give up on it.  Even though there were certainly times I wanted to.  Ha, listen to me go on about my imaginary accomplishment.

Below, a list of all NaBloPoMo posts here on A Fine Reflection, starting with the most recent.

Rushing to get started

After this, I plan on taking a freakin’ break for a few days!

I made a deal with myself that if I made it through NaBloPoMo without missing any days, I would reward myself for my commitment with a new domain and a self-hosted WordPress blog.  Just like the good ol’ days.

Problem is, it’s been a long time since I’ve done any of that.  And I have some questions for my fellow blog friends! Your answers are greatly appreciated.

Which company did you choose for domain registration?

Who is your host? Would you recommend them?

Are their prices reasonable?

I’ll have to think it all over some more, but I think I’m gonna do it soon.

Some A’s for your Q’s

First and foremost, I’d like to thank everyone who asked questions on Saturday’s Q&A post!  You have made my life – for pretending to care about my mundane shenanigans. (Just kidding, I know I’m mad interesting yo). Not really. Maybe a little.

ANYWAY.

Here are your questions answered.

Dez asked…

What types of games are you into?

Wii – Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Mario Kart Wii

Xbox 360 – Dance Central 1 & 2. (I once tried playing Call of Duty multiplayer with Josh…I completely suck at it).

Nintendo DS – All the Lego installments…and of course New Super Mario Bros.  I really like Mario games, can you tell?

Phone – I’m totally hooked on Words With Friends!

What made you decide to lose weight?

Last January I saw some candid pictures of me taken at a Christmas gathering and I cringed.  I just decided that I was tired of being tired, overweight, and unhappy with my body.  It was at that point I decided to change it.

What are some of your favorite meals?

Oh man, this will be  tough one because I LOVE to eat.  Some of my favorites are Spaghetti with garlic bread sticks, homemade soups (chicken noodle, vegetable beef, bean & tomato), and chili.  I also love this trio: marinated grilled chicken, green beans, and mashed potatoes!

What turns you off in a friendship?

When the other person has a constant ‘woe is me’ attitude for no good reason and/or they are always unhappy or unappreciative for what they have.  I’m not a fan of pity parties, and I don’t attend the ones I’m invited to.

Sassyray asked…

What’s the last good book you read?

“The Road” by Cormac McCarthy.  Really great read about an ‘end of times’ scenario!

What do you miss most about being a kid?

Being stress and worry free.  Not having to worry about finances, a career, the mortgage, car repair…I remember a time when my biggest complaint about any given day was going to school and learning things.  Maybe even writing some things down on paper.  Man, I had it rough.  If it were only still that simple.  How great would it be just to be able to go back and have NOTHING TO DO except play ‘beach’ with my barbies in the bathroom sink all afternoon until time for dinner – one that I didn’t have to plan for, pay for, or cook…I should really thank my mom more often!

What 2 things could you not live without?

Assuming we’re talking about material possessions here, I’d have to say I could go without most modern day luxuries if I had to – internet, tv, cell phone, etc.  Not saying I would LIKE it (it would totally suck…suck real hard), but I could do it. As long as I still had my family, I’d make it just fine!

You girls and your nail polish photos

I’ve been seeing these everywhere lately, and I want to be cool too!  Let’s see if I can do this right.

Hmm, okay.  Clearly I have not quite mastered the ‘polish bottle clutch’ as I refer to it, where your nails are all neatly aligned along the bottle to make the photo more aesthetically pleasing.  Apparently this part takes practice.

Also, I feel like my awkward polish bottle clutch makes my hand look less like an attempt to show the color of my nails and more like an attempt to show you how it would look if Davy Jones painted his crab claw in glittery black and then took a picture of it.

I also see where I painted outside the lines on a few nails…okay, all the nails.  But hey, it was Saturday night and the kid was at a sleepover and Josh called me just as I was starting to do this and he was all, “I’m almost home. LET’S GET CRAZY AND GO GET SOME POPEYE’S CHICKEN.”

And I’m all, “I’m TRYING to paint my nails right now in the peace and quiet.  You’re ruining it.”

And he’s all, “Yeah, HURRY THAT SHIT UP THEN.”

So I did, because fried chicken became a priority in that moment.

I’m not proud of this.

Google Reader – I’m probably doing it wrong

I only recently started using Google Reader to stay up to date with the blogs I enjoy reading.  I’m somewhat of a simpleton when it comes to stuff like this, because it doesn’t take much to impress me.  Subscribing to blog feeds and having them listed neatly in alphabetical order is so much more practical than trying to remember to visit each individual site.  I like practical.  So what if I still have useless papers and old Wal*Mart receipts from when Bush was still president strewn around various places of my house.  Dammit, I am ORGANIZED on the internet.

The thing about Google is, they rule the internetz.  So of course every day when I log in to Google Reader there’s all kinds of stuff displayed from one end of the screen to the other, detailing all the super awesome features and gadgets I have access to for using it.

In essence, it’s like Google is telling me ‘hey you girl, look at all this impressive shit we got going on today’.

‘Over here we have helpful tips & tricks for its usage!  Did you know you can press the space bar and slide the page to the edge and to the right and if you press F8 + Insert + Page Down + Num Lock + Shift, all of your USB drives will dispense a complimentary unicorn horn!’

My mind boggles with what they’re capable of.

But regardless, even though I know Google Reader is supposed to be used for a bazillion different things apparently, all I really care about is the ‘Subscribe’ button.  Oh, and the alphabeticalness!

I’m always on the hunt for new blogs to add to my neat little list, but currently, this is what it looks like…

Mario Mushroom Toes!

I had a long, stressful day at work today and decided to paint my nails tonight while I relaxed.  But I wanted to do something different…something fun and creative.

I guess the Nintendo fangirl in me came out in a big way, because this is what I came up with…

Weeee, they make me so happy, even though the 1ups are horribly disfigured and my toes are an abomination to humankind.  I don’t care though!  Not bad for a first attempt at nail art (is that what it’s called?  That’s what I’m calling it.)

I’ll even tell you how I did it, in case anyone wants to know and try it out for themselves.

Materials:

You’ll need some white, red, and green nail polish, in case that isn’t blatantly obvious from the photo.

You’ll also need: nail polish remover, a few Q-Tips, a toothpick, and a fine-tipped black Sharpie marker.

(Quick note about green polish: I ran into a minor problem because the only shade of green polish I have is a very bright green, almost neon.  Definitely not true to 1up mushroom form.  So, I mixed a few drops of bright green on a paper plate with a couple of drops of a dark blue color that I had.  Mix it around with a toothpick until it’s nicely blended.  Voila! You have dark green.  Use a Q-Tip to apply.)

Step 1: Apply 2-3 coats of white polish to all your nails.

Step 2: Once the white dries, take your red OR green polish and carefully paint a horizontal line across the midpoint of your toenail.  Fill in the top half with the color.  It will probably take at least 2 coats to make it solid enough so that the white doesn’t show underneath.

Step 3: While you’re waiting for all that mess to dry (and if you’re like me, you’ll definitely have a mess at this point), unscrew the lid of your nail polish remover and pour a little bit into the cap.  Soak one end of a Q-Tip, then rub it around the edges of your nails to get extra polish off your skin.  We want our mushrooms to look as neat and tidy as possible!

Step 4: Time to apply the dots and it’s really quite simple.  Dip brush into your white polish but DON’T wipe off all the excess on the sides.  You’ll need a little bit extra to just carefully ‘dot’ in various places.  It’s a little more tedious to do on the smaller toes.  Just 2 or 3 teeny tiny dots is all it takes.

Step 5: Please listen to me when I say WAIT FOR YOUR DOTS TO DRY BEFORE MOVING ON.  They’re very easily smeared, and having to start over at this point really, really blows.  Don’t ask me how I know.

ANYWAY

This step is pretty self explanatory.  Once all the polish is dry, with your Sharpie draw 2 vertical parallel lines in the white part of each nail.  The ‘eyes’ should touch the color at the top, but NOT go all the way down to the cuticle.

Be creative with your colors and have fun!

Some of my favorite things – part 1

I have a knack for being a Negative Nancy more often than I probably should.  It’s nice to stop for a beat and be reminded of some of the things that make life a little brighter no matter what kind of situation you’re facing.  Here are some of my favorite things.

  • Those times when you wake up and panic for a split second thinking you missed your alarm.  Then realizing you have another whole hour before it goes off.
  • Waking up in the middle of the night and hearing thunder softly off in the distance.
  • Clothes fresh out of the dryer on a cold morning.
  • Hot coffee and a good book.
  • The feeling you get after finishing something you’ve been putting off forever.
  • Making a meal that, for once, everyone in the family will eat, enjoy, and not complain about.
  • Surprise love notes from your other half when you least expect it.
  • Those days when your hair does exactly what you wanted it to do. (I don’t have these nearly enough!)
  • Family breakfast on Sunday morning.
  • The day after daylight savings time ends. Because of the ‘gained’ hour, I feel extra productive.
  • Huge fluffy slippers to wear around the house.  Or the grocery store.  Whatever.
  • A pretty new skein of yarn to add to the mountain of them I already have.
  • Re-watching a favorite childhood movie and remembering nearly every word.
  • A fully stocked pantry.
  • Finding that birthday/Christmas/graduation money you thought you spent but really stashed away in a drawer.

What are some of your favorite things?  If you decide to post a list on your own blog, leave the link in the comments so I can take a look!
